Activities

At Air Cadets, we do a range of different activities that use different skills. On this page, we will tell you about the different, exciting activities and opportunities available in the Air Cadets.

Camps

An opportunity that all cadets get is to go on camps. These normally last for a weekend, a week or longer. These camps may be in the UK or abroad, in locations like Gibraltar, Cyprus, and even Canada and the US. They are often at RAF stations or military bases, and are an opportunity to take part in a lot of thrilling activities in a short time frame, and get an idea what life on a base is like.

Flying

As an Air Cadet, you will obviously get many chances to fly! You will get the opportunity to be in control of a Grob Tutor with the help, of a qualified pilot for up to an hour each time, and if you are lucky, you may get an experience in another aircraft such as a Chinook!

Adventurous Training & Shooting

Adventurous Training is another exhilarating activity that includes orienteering, hiking, fieldcraft and can even lead you to the adventurous training competition team. Cadets can also be rifle trained at the squadron and gain marksman badges. In addition, they can also be trained to use some of the rifles that the armed forces use.

Sport

There is a wide range of sports that you can take part in at Air Cadets, from football and shooting, to swimming and hockey. There are usually male and female competitions, divided into junior and senior categories for each sport so anyone can take part! As there are so many squadrons across the country, there are opportunities to progress to wing, regional, and even core (national) levels in your sport! You can do this at one of the frequent sports tournaments. Everyone supports you for taking part no matter what your ability is, so even if you don’t win, you still win points for your squadron!

Drill and Ceremonial

As a member of a uniformed organisation you will also be expected to take part in the drill and ceremonial side of the Air Cadets. Even here, there are lots of exciting and thought-provoking things you can take part in, from marching through central London on Trafalgar day, to commemorating Remembrance Day in November. You can even, if you get really good, take part in drill competitions with one of the best drill squadrons in the country, 1015 Horsham, the winners of the national banner drill competition in 2015!

STEM

As a squadron we also engage in many STEM activities, STEM standing for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We recently had a team compete in the Cyber Centurion competition, where they had their computer abilities tested to the limit. A team from the squadron has also made it into the 2nd round of the RAF 100 Years engineering competition, and as such has been given thousands of pounds to develop their proposal. On top of this, you can study academic subjects through the classification system, involving everything from how a jet engine works to meteorology.

Other Activities

As air cadets we also get lots of chances to go to military shows and help out at charity events. This includes Poppy Appeal collecting, the Race for Life, Capel Military Rally and many more. There are also trips that we do as well, including ones to Peru to see Machu Picchu , and even NASA! Below is a picture of some vehicles at the Capel Military Rally.
